Walk for AIDS Silicon Valley Generates Essential Support in Hard Times
20th Annual Walk Organizes Community, Civic Leaders in Fight Against HIV/AIDS
October 10, 2009
SAN JOSE, CA— An estimated 5,000 participants are expected to gather next Sunday, October 18th in the largest HIV/AIDS fundraiser in Silicon Valley, coming at a time when support is needed most. This is the 20th Annual Walk for AIDS to be held in the south bay region, having generated over six million dollars for HIV/AIDS programs during that time-span.
“The catastrophic decrease in state funding for HIV/AIDS prevention, testing and outreach has and will continue to have a crippling impact on local agencies, and their capacity for providing these essential services to our community,” stated Dane Dugan, Executive Director of the Silicon Valley AIDS Leadership Center. “Now, more than ever, our ability to organize as a community in the fight against AIDS is imperative.”
Registration is still open to teams and individuals through the morning of the walk, though online registration is encouraged. Participants will start at the festival grounds of Discovery Meadow in downtown San Jose, and walk the 5.2 mile course along the Guadalupe River Trail.
Following the walk, a return celebration for participants will be held at Discovery Meadow, with lunch, games and entertainment performances. The event is being sponsored by Cypress Semiconductor, Amtrak, Valley Transportation Authority, Hobees California Restaurants, Gilead Sciences, NBC Bay Area, El Camino Hospital, Woodland Park and Metro Newspaper.
