Executive Producer of Batman to Speak at Youth Leadership Summit on HIV/AIDS
February 12, 2009
SAN JOSE, CA—Michael Uslan, Executive Producer of the Batman movie series, will be the keynote speaker at the upcoming Silicon Valley Youth Leadership Summit on HIV/AIDS taking place at San Jose’s Fairmont Hotel on April 10, 2009. The event is a unique opportunity for young people of high school and college age to gather and learn about leadership, citizenship and have open dialogue about their perception of HIV/AIDS.
“We are very excited to have Mr. Uslan join us for the Summit,” commented Dane Dugan, Executive Director of AIDS Coalition Silicon Valley, who is producing the event. “He brings a one of a kind approach to motivating young people to get more involved in their community and give attention to important issues like HIV/AIDS.”
Beyond Uslan, attendees will hear speakers like Dr. Rick Rigsby, a professor for Texas A&M University and former CBS news broadcaster. The one day event will include general sessions featuring HIV positive youth sharing their stories about the impact of the virus in their lives and breakout workshops where participants will make a plan on how to stop the spread of HIV in the youth population. The Summit is being provided free of charge by Xilinx and AIDS Coalition Silicon Valley.
According to the Center for Disease Control, 47.8 percent of young adults between the ages of 13 to 24 who are HIV positive have not been diagnosed. An estimated 1.1 million people are living with the virus in the United States, with over 4,000 of those individuals calling Silicon Valley home. Since public funding for HIV/AIDS prevention and education is limited, grassroots and community based programs are being called upon more often to address these alarming statistics. The Silicon Valley Youth Leadership Summit on HIV/AIDS is the Coalition’s landmark effort to reach out to the youth demographic.
AIDS Coalition Silicon Valley is a non‐profit organization dedicated to being a leader in the local fight against HIV/AIDS while working to improve the lives of people affected by the pandemic. The organization annually produces the Walk for AIDS Silicon Valley and Unmask the Mysteries Gala, the two largest HIV/AIDS fundraisers in Silicon Valley. The Coalition also provides substantial financial contributions to local HIV/AIDS service agencies through their Community Grants Program. For more information call (408) 451‐9255.
